Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child she was suffering from an obsessive compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to the word association. Ford began performing in her teens, and was part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't right for her. Ford later applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Her classmate were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. Apart from her regular stage work, Tate was a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her comedy stand-up and became part of her resume in the year 1996.
